Mother Daughter Relationships – Are We the Same or Totally the Opposite?

Mother Daughter Relationships – Are We the Same or Totally the Opposite?

Coming to terms with your Mother? My mother has passed away but there are some things I wished could have been better or different. One of them was the ability to have a decent conversation with her. We never really discussed anything. It was always easier for her to chat with my brothers then it was with me. I lacked a lot of insight when it came to communications in my relationships. Certainly our relationship would have been very different if I would have known now what I know today

My mother was raised in an era that generated barefoot and pregnant women. The women were supposed to be dependent on the man to bring home the bacon. She was to cook a meal for him, wash his clothes and keep a clean house and obey. This was all based on IF she keeps her man home.

I acquired a different lifestyle completely opposite of hers. I sowed my wild oats as they say, totally changed directions and then went back to college, earning some degrees.

Today, I would hope that she would be smiling at me from Heaven because of my achievements. Or then again, she may be watching my feet still to see if I did anything different to them yet. Maybe I should have a foot pedicure and make my feet look pretty. I think now that was what she was trying to really say when she would tell me “you have ugly feet”.

We never discussed feet any further than that, because I never knew what she meant by that and would just shut down. Our conversations would then become stuck. I took it personally, thinking she was rejecting me and developed a complex about my feet. I have ugly feet and she is letting me know it; instead of us trying to discuss what I could do to make them prettier.

I think this was supposed to be my mother’s way of trying to help me out with my appearance.  Mothers are all about appearances. They really want us to look our best.

Debra Tannen is a linguist and has caught my interest. She studies conversational styles between people and how this affects our relationships. Collecting examples of conversation, she figures out the other person’s point of view. She has studied mother – daughter relationships and has a book out. You’re Wearing THAT?: Understanding Mothers and Daughters in Conversation You can find her website here. https://www9.georgetown.edu/faculty/tannend/book_argument_culture.html

NEW GREEN ON THE HORIZON

Hurricanes aren’t going away and neither is global warming.
Instead of ignoring the environmental wake up call; let it guide us into making wiser decisions about what to do if oil production stops and hurricanes prevent movement period.

“We’re going to have to come to grips with the fact that the climate crisis is threatening the future of our civilization and just because those words sound shrill is no excuse for not saying them. We have to face up to this,” urged Gore. “We’re putting another 70 million tons of global warming pollution in the thin shell of our atmosphere surrounding our planet every 24 hours. This is madness.” (Gore)

“We owe it to ourselves and especially to our children and grandchildren and future generations,” declared Gore. “Who are we to make a decision to just keep on being so wasteful and destructive in the teeth of the warnings from every single prestigious scientific organization on this planet? Every single national academy of sciences in the world has endorsed the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report saying we have got to act on this.” (Gore, Green Revolution, Green Jobs Central to National Clean Energy Summit 2.0)

There is a solution to the natural disasters over which we have no control. A new economy is emerging on the horizon called “The Green Market”. The Green Market offers a way to create new jobs that can’t be exported. They suggest investing in a green economy and training people in home cities; which means a company can provide some job stability; by focusing on manufacturing things that can’t be outsourced. Business & Economics discusses Obama’s call for green jobs. (‘What Shade of Green Best Suits the Economy?’)
http://www.miller-mccune.com/business_economics/what-shade-of-green-best-suits-the-economy-910?article_page=2

Consider also these facts from the UNEPGreenJobs report:

“Green Jobs: Towards Decent Work in a Sustainable, Low-Carbon World assembles evidence— quantitative, anecdotal, and conceptual—for currently existing green jobs in key economic sectors (renewable energy, buildings and construction, transportation, basic industry, agriculture, and forestry) and presents estimates for future green employment. The pace of green job creation is likely to accelerate in the years ahead. A global transition to a low-carbon and sustainable economy can create large numbers of green jobs across many sectors of the economy, and indeed can become an engine of development. Current green job creation is taking place in both the rich countries and in some of the major developing economies.

The “UNEPGreenJobs report” states that a new economy is emerging and will be supporting the green point of view. They lists four changes that will happen to the employment field.

First, in some cases, additional jobs will be created—as in the manufacturing of pollution-control devices added to existing production equipment.
Second, some employment will be substituted—as in shifting from fossil fuels to renewables, or from truck manufacturing to rail car manufacturing, or from landfilling and waste incineration to recycling.
Third, certain jobs may be eliminated without direct replacement—as when packaging materials are discouraged or banned and their production is discontinued.
Fourth, it would appear that many existing jobs (especially such as plumbers, electricians, metal workers, and construction workers) will simply be transformed and redefined as day-to-day skill sets, work methods, and profiles are greened.( UNEPGreenJobs report )

Go Greener - Let Go of your HD TV – Go Camping.

Digital TV is contributing to global warming. Those new HD TV screens are made with a chemical called nitrogen trifluoride. According to NASA  research this chemical can linger in the air for up to 550 years and has more charge than a “coal-fired power plant”.(geology.com) This is scary information making me think; are those new digital screens capable of sending out  chemicals into our homes, as we innocently relax and enjoy our favorite movie?

Camping could prove to be a safer alternative to staying indoors this summer. Be careful with your choice of bug spray. Bug sprays contain the chemical DEET and used in small amounts are considered to be safe. Research has shown that DEET causes side effects if over used. DEET can cause headaches, nausea and even psychological issues. Avoid the chemical all together and go natural. Choose products that contain plant oils. Citronella and oil of lemon eucalyptus are the top pick approved by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Peppermint, geranium and lemongrass oils are also highly suggested.  Protect yourself naturally from mosquitoes and ticks. Usage Tips

·         “Wear long sleeves, long pants, closed shoes and socks in areas with high mosquito or tick populations.

·         For added protection against ticks, tuck pants into socks and shirts into pants.

·         Wear light colors. There is some evidence that mosquitoes are more attracted to dark colors than light colors, and light colors make any ticks that might crawl on you more visible.

·         Avoid being outside when the bugs are worst, generally dusk to dawn.

·         When walking in tick-infested areas, stick to the center of the path and avoid brushing against grasses, where ticks wait to hop a ride.

·         Check for ticks at the end of each day, paying careful attention to your head and warm spots such as underarms, behind the knees and between the toes.”(Green Guide)

The New Retrofitting Market

Just wanted to share this article with everybody.

Green Building Retrofits Represent a Potential $400B Market

Boosted in part by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which will provide significant funding for renovations to federal building, the total potential market for major green renovations in the commercial building sector is approximately $400 billion, according to a new study by Pike Research. Although currently a relatively small market, the market researcher forecasts that comprehensive efficiency retrofits will more than triple in annual revenue to $6.6 billion by 2013.

The market researcher says the total U.S. commercial building market, with 70-billion square-feet of space, delivers one of the largest opportunities for energy savings, reduction of carbon emissions and increased property values.

While direct energy savings can be significant with green retrofits, the study, “Energy Efficiency Retrofits for Commercial and Public Buildings”, indicates that most major projects will not be driven by cost savings, but instead will be initiated to meet broader policy and business objectives such as lower carbon footprints, higher employee productivity, and higher property values.

Backing these findings, a study released last year by The Global Facility Management Association, finds that ninety-two percent of survey respondents to the Green Practices Study say that they are working to make their facilities more sustainable. In addition, 67 percent say their customers are “forcing them” to make sustainable changes, while forty-six percent say the government is forcing the change.

Another recent study shows that commercial building owners can reap higher rental premiums for green buildings. The study, conducted by the Henley University of Reading in the U.K., shows that certified buildings provide a rental premium and that the more highly rated that buildings are, the higher the rent. Based on a sample of transaction prices for 292 Energy Star and 30 LEED-certified buildings, price premiums were 10 percent and 31 percent, respectively.

The Pike study examines market opportunities, drivers, barriers, and best practices within the commercial building sector. It also provides detailed quantitative analysis for green retrofits, along with forecasts for market growth over the next five years.

Still at the infancy stage, green building retrofit companies are creating new ways to show organizations how to save money, cut energy use and reduce carbon emissions through energy and lighting retrofits.

DON’T GIVE UP, LOOK AT ALL THE FAMOUS PEOPLE with ADHD

Albert Einstein had to come up with a lot of effort to do his schoolwork. Thomas Edison, I’m sure didn’t mind don’t not being able to pay attention in class. His mind was probably dreaming up ideas for the future. These two men did a lot to improve our world and because they were different; society has thought them to be ADHD.

What is ADHD?. “Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood disorders and can continue through adolescence and adulthood. Symptoms include difficulty staying focused and paying attention, difficulty controlling behavior, and hyperactivity (over-activity).”(National Institute of Mental Health) Look at all these famous people who have been diagnosed with ADHD and went on to do something big with their life.

Sports Personalities

Terry Bradshaw won four Super Bowls while quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. His job now is football analyst and he is co-host on Fox NFL Sunday. Terry Bradshaw is diagnosed with ADHD and clinical depression.

Hank Kuehne plays golf with the Canadian Tour and has won the U.S. Amateur championship in 1998. Hank used to drink a lot as a teenager and after seeking help at 19 remains sober. He says that he drank heavy due to undiagnosed learning disabilities and ADHD.

Cammi Granoto doesn’t mind being ADHD. She has won a gold medal for ice hockey in the Olympics. Since 1990, she has competed in world championships. She also struggled a lot in school and finds comfort in the fact that there was a reason.

Entertainment and Media Personalities

Glenn Beck founded Fusion Magazine. He works as a conservative radio personality and makes an appearance daily on CNN Headline News. ADHD is often a topic on his radio show.

Woody Harrelson is diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD. Woody played the bartender on Cheers. His movies include Kingpin, The People vs. Larry Flynt, Anger Management, North County, and Indecent Proposal.

Mariette Hartley played in The Incredible Hulk and won an Emmy. She helps adults with ADHD deal with and manage symptoms. She also helps adults by her discussions and videos on ADHD.

Artists and Authors

Robert Toth, artist and designer is also well know for his sculptures. Smithsonian Institute, the Royal Scottish Museum, Iwashimizu-Hachiman-Gu and the Vatican Museum have all displayed his work.

John Dunn has written a lot of books: Booked to Die, Bookman’s Wake, Tune in Yesterday, On the Air and Bookman’s Promise. John Dunn never finished high school but went back later on to earn his GED. He’s
a jack of all trades, working as a copy boy and working in a glass shop; until he discovered that he could write.

Business Professionals

Paul Orfalea started Kinko’s. Paul was held back in second grade and struggled with the whole school idea. He barely made it through high school and made C’s and D’s in college. He has been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia. ADHD has allowed him to “live in the moment and capitalize on the opportunities I spotted.”

David Neeleman founded JetBlue Airways. He’s not on any medication. He says “along with the disorganization, procrastination, inability to focus, and all the other bad things that come with ADD, there also comes creativity and the ability to take risks.”

Dexter Scott King is the CEO of the King Center. He is the son of Martin Luther King, Jr. He wasn’t diagnosed with ADD until he was an adult.

Peter Wright is blessed with the lucky three dyslexia, dysgraphia and ADHD. He specializes in educational issues for children with special needs. He’s their lawyer. Wright’s Law, a website created by Peter contains
information to help parents understand special education law; so they can be their advocate.

Relax, US Post Office Can Handle Your Green Affairs

Did you know that you can recycle your hotel keys, gift cards and turn them into usable new cards? If your yogurt cups, ketchup bottles, sour cream containers have #5 on the bottom of them you can recycle and turn them into razors and bowls. Save your high powered energy bar wraps and drink pouches. They can be transformed into shower curtains, tote bags and fashion accessories. Be careful you might be stepping on someone else’s shoes.  Some of your athletic fields are made from recycled tennis shoes. Not only are these great ideas. They can all be sent back for recycling by mail.

“Better than a granola bar - joy is pure energy.”(Way #8 Constant Joy)

Joy according to the American Heritage Dictionary is “Intense and especially ecstatic or exultant happiness The expression or manifestation of such feeling. A source or an object of pleasure or satisfaction: their only child, their pride and joy. To fill with ecstatic happiness, pleasure, or satisfaction. To enjoy. [Middle English joie, from Old French, from Latin gaudia, pl. of gaudium, joy, from gaudēre, to rejoice; see gāu- in Indo-European roots.]  (APA)

Practicing an attitude of gratitude creates a mindset that is equipped to handle life on life terms.  Are you seeking joy outside yourself, or does your joy come from within? With joy comes abundant energy for a higher creativity level. Joy gives you self esteem enhancing everything that you put your hand to. Children are naturally joyful because they are innocent with out the daily responsibilities of the adult world. Adults get so caught up in the problems of raising a child instead of being grateful they were blessed with a child. It’s not about what happens to you in life; it’s how you react to what happens to you in life.

“Joy gives you the power, motivation and confidence to achieve things that otherwise seem too difficult to attempt. Better than a granola bar - joy is pure energy.”
